Japan PM Abe steals the show as Mario during Rio Olympics closing ceremony

RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug 22 — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II memorably ‘parachuted’ into the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony with James Bond.

Now, it looks like Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe might have topped that cameo with a surprise appearance at the 2016 Rio Olympics closing ceremony — dressed as the famous Nintendo gaming character Mario.

During the segment in which 2016 hosts Brazil handed over to Tokyo for the 2020 Games, a video was played featuring all things Japan — including sumo wrestling, bullet trains, Pac-Man, Doraemon and Hello Kitty.

It then cut to Abe travelling by car and announcing that he won’t make it in time to Rio.

Super Mario suddenly appears and runs around Tokyo before jumping into a green pipe and drilling through the earth all the way to Rio’s Maracana Stadium.

After ripping off the iconic plumber overalls and hat, the figure is revealed to be none other than Abe holding a bright red ball in his hands. – MMO
