LOS ANGELES, Jan 6 ― Steve Harvey is finally talking about the blunder he made while announcing the Miss Universe winner and he insists that it was not a publicity stunt.
Recalling the chaos that ensued after Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez was forced to give up the crown to its rightful owner Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Harvey explained during the “Steve Harvey Morning Show” that he was confused by the card and he read the name that he saw on it.
He then denied that the winning country was on the teleprompter, as some candidates claimed. Many had questioned whether the embarrassing mix-up had been staged to raise Harvey’s profile
“Why the hell would I do that? I’m already famous. Do you really think I wanted to be famous like this?”
“I got a guy in my ear saying, ‘We gotta do something! We gotta do something!’ That’s all I’m hearing, all the confusion of everybody backstage. So I took it upon myself and I walked out there to do something.
“Did I make a mistake?” he continued. “Yes, I did. Wholeheartedly. (But) at this point in the game, I’m not in the finger pointing business and rolling other people under the bus. So, I did what I was trained to do by my father … You make a mistake and you own up to it. And I tried to fix it, I tried to fix it right there.”
He also sympathised with Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez, describing her experience as horrible.
“I haven’t been able to reach out and talk to Miss Colombia. Now, have I tried? Yes. But haven’t gotten a response,” he revealed. – MMO.
