Interview with Adeline Raja – The right person to call for your events

Adeline J Raja has an extensive experience portfolio in different working environments and we could concretely say she can handle any kind of working scenarios with her vast experience. She has also participated in several beauty pageants locally for experience and exposure. Presently she is running an events management company – Aurora Productions and got the chance to interview her. Let’s hear from her.

Tell us about yourself.

I am 34 years old, love running, reading, music and dance. LOVE EMCEEING! I started working at the age of 18 as a Nursery / Kindergarten teacher for 2 years. After that I joined Singapore Armed Forces (uniformed regular) and was in the logistics line for 10.5 years.

From Singapore Armed Forces, I moved to Singapore Grand Prix Formula 1 for 4 years working in the Operations department.

Currently, I am working in a Tourism & Hospitality School.

I am also running an event management company called Aurora Productions.

Describe your typical day?

I hold a full time job as an Industry Training Coordinator at William Angliss Institute, a tourism and hospitality school, therefore I will be occupied from 9 to 6 pm. I am also pursuing my WSQ Diploma in MICE & Events course twice a week in the evenings, which will be ending in September 2017.

On my free days, I am occupied with my volunteer services with Chua Chu Kang IAEC & LISHA Women’s Wing. I will also meet my clients & friends. At other times, I will spend time with my family and concentrate on growing my business.

What ignited the spark in you to start Aurora Productions?

I always had the keen interest in the events line and was helping friends plan and execute their events. Sometimes I do emceeing too for them. In the forces, I was always approached to emcee events and over the span of 10.5 years, I have covered almost all types of SAF events, which also includes a Senior Officers Dinner at the Istana.

Moreover, I have contacts with djs, dancers, performers, decorators and various types of entertainment requirements which might be needed for an event. My friends will contact me when they require anyone for their events.

However as I was a Civil Servant then, I was unable to run my own business. After I had left the forces, a small group of friends encouraged me to start my own events business. With the blessing of my parents, Aurora Productions was born in 2014 and growing steadily.

Please elaborate more about your business.

  • My main forte is Emcee and DJ Services. Apart from that, I also run a full range of services for registry of marriages, weddings, birthdays and other event services required by clients.
  • We provide event consultancy services.

We also focus on budget events. We work around the client’s budget and give them the best value for their money. Our charges are very reasonable. Please contact us for our reasonable quotation.

Who is your role model, and why?

My parents. My dad always has creative ideas that we try to twine into our daily life. My mum, runs her own spice business in the market. I always admire her patience, I tried my hands in the market when she was overseas but I did not have her level of patience and tolerance.

How did you develop key partnerships?

  • I do lots of online research and send emails to potential companies for collaborations, both local and overseas.
  • I also attend networking events organized by the volunteer groups that I am involved in and get to know other people running their own business (either part time or full time).
  • Through social media.

What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?

My first failure was a maternity photo shoot on a yacht. We were too excited with the opening of Aurora Productions and we jumped into the wagon without doing much research. It was an eye-opener for us that any events that we run, no matter how experienced we are, if it is a new concept, research must be done.

I always emphasise my 1st event failure in any talks that I conduct, to give a small morale booster that life is not a bed of roses. There will be ups and downs in business, we have to learn from mistakes and move on.

How do you generate new ideas?

I always get my weird ideas either at night or when I go for my runs. I listen to music while running and my mind will flourish with crazy ideas.

What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage fear?

I do not have any fear as I know what I am doing, I do it with a conscience. As long as we have not caused any form of harm to anybody, there will not be a need to fear anything. Lead our life to the fullest as much as we can. There should not be any regrets in life when we turn back to look at our life’s journey.

What three pieces of advice would you give to anyone who wants to become entrepreneurs.

  • Dare to dream and turn it into reality.
  • Do not be afraid to ask when you are unsure. If you fear to ask, you will never improve / upgrade yourself.
  • Research Research Research.

Please contact Adeline J Raja if you are planning any events.

Madinathul Restaurant: Superior Cuisine @ Comfortable Price

Madinathul Restaurant, located at BLK 304 Ubi Ave 1 #01-101, Singapore 400304, is among those amazing eateries where you can go whenever you want. That’s right; these amazing guys keep their restaurant’s door open round the clock. They know hunger and craving don’t have the concept of time. When you wanna eat, you got to eat, it’s that simple. Be it a hearty biryani or a crisp and scrumptious prata (we’ll talk about the food in detail, have patients dear foodie friends), you can have one, or as many as your want, any time you want. Wow, isn’t that amazing, a 24-hour open restaurant that serves authentic Indian Muslim Cuisine.

17690370_120300002955846827_1032056374_nAs we mentioned earlier that biryani & prata are a must have, they also happen to be their best sellers. Prata, Madinathul Restaurant takes pride in offering 20 different varieties of pratas.

But before we talk about the restaurant, let’s take a look at the journey. After all, it’s the journey that brings us to amazing destinations, with a story that really lightens up our world.

The inception of Madinathul Restaurant was destined and etched in stone when Mr. Hj. M. A. Shukoor decided to leave India and come to Singapore in the 1960’s.

In the beginning, he started working in a paper store and gradually set up his own book stall. Eventually, the Singapore government decided to widen the roads and thus, Mr. Shukoor had to close his book stall for good. After this, he decided to open a Provision Shop in Bukit Batok. But destiny had something else in mind, destiny wanted us to taste the amazing food he was able to prepare as an avid chef he’s always been. His provision shop didn’t do him many benefits. And that is when the events took a flavorsome turn and he got into the food business. Thanks to his love for food and skills of making some amazing dishes, he came up with the idea of Madinathul Restaurant in Ubi Ave 1 in 1989, after changing and moving a lot of food stalls.

Since then, Haji M. A. Shukoor used to take care of everything that happens at the Madinathul Restaurant. From buying fresh ingredients to training the chefs to tending to customers, he has done it all. When you put your heart and soul in your venture, greatness follows. And this is exactly what defines the story of this amazing restaurant in Singapore, the one that brings the taste of true Muslim food to its patrons. More than 26 years have gone since, and the taste of Pratas, if the locals are to be believed, has remains consistent. That’s the promise of being a food lover who also decides to become a restaurateur.

As luck would have it, in 2016, Mr. Shukoor decided to retire and hand over the business to a suitable heir. His failing health didn’t allow him to work and take the stress of running a business, and at the age of 84 years, he decided to call it quits.

17807170_120300002942942200_1693715717_nTill the time Mr. Shukoor was in charge of everything, the restaurant was always packed with customers waiting for their order. While Madinathul Restaurant serves a lot of Muslim dishes, it was the Biryani and the Pratas that took the locals of Singapore by storm. The restaurant has been a host to many film stars, celebrities and food critics.

After Mr. Shukoor took retirement from his work, his daughter, Mrs. Noor, affectionately called the Iron Lady, took over the restaurant. Among the seven siblings, she is the only one taking care of this business after the retirement of her dad. Born in Karaikal, India, she was brought to Singapore by her parents as a baby, did her schooling in Singapore & also holds a Diploma in English from British Counsel.

Noor is married to Mr. Zackariah & the couple is blessed with 2 beautiful daughters, Rizwana & Rahlaah. The father and daughter duo has something very peculiar in common; they both ventured into different lines of work before becoming a restaurateur. While Mr. Shukoor began his career with a paper store, his daughter, the now in charge of Madinathul restaurant started her career as a makeup artist after training from Cosmo Proof. Apart from being an amazing manager and a brilliant makeup artist, Noor also happens to manufacture handmade soaps & organic beauty products and candles made form organic ingredients. She is definitely a woman of many talents.

17741018_120300002959876248_1091479694_nAll the foodies can enjoy a hearty biryani or palatable Prata anytime they want to, but you’ll need to wait for a month if you don’t visit them in April right away. If you are planning to visit the restaurant in May, you will see the “Closed for Renovation, will be back in June” sign board over there. Ok, we made it pretty straight forward, these flavorsome guys will definitely make it delightful too!

The reason behind this renovation is pretty simple. Mr. Shukoor being an old school had always maintained an old fashioned style of ambience, which we found really cool. Noor, on the other hand, is a different personality altogether.

Noor is planning to give the restaurant a touch of her own personality. Being brought up in the cosmopolitan culture with people of almost all ethnicities working and eating together, she believes it’s the right time Madinathul Restaurant also welcomes the change while keeping its originality and its soul intact. And this is exactly why it’s going to be just a month of renovation.

17793047_120300002950459224_429271886_nNoor plans to include Western, Malay as well as Thai seafood in their menu. The menu and the cuisines will be available on scheduled basis, let’s take a detailed look at what will be served at what time.

  • Malay food will be served in morning
  • Biryani will be served from morning till evening
  • Thai Seafood & Western food will be served during evening hours
  • And keeping the old school charm alive, Prata will be available 24hours a day!

If THAT doesn’t sound like good news, we hardly think anything ever will. There are many other restaurants in the region, Chinese restaurants mostly, but Noor believes they won’t be a competition as Madinathul offers what these restaurants never will: a taste of real food.

Apolo Bistro: Where Ethnicity meets Globalization

There are very few restobars that really takes you back to your homeland with their food. Apolo Restaurant and Bar, located at 48 Serangoon Road, Little India Arcade #02-13, Singapore 217959, is one such amazing place that serves Indian food to pamper the taste buds of those living far away from their home.

Apolo Bistro offers a wide assortment of Indian food, from Hariyali Tawa Paneer, a roasted Cottage cheese dish with green chutney to smoked duck to tandoori prawns, the starters include everything for everybody, be the customer a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian.

The bistro takes the traditional Indian food and gives it a modern touch without compromising the originality of the dish. The chefs are definitely real artists who bring the warmth of Indian culinary art and gave it a global appeal.

The food here is so amazing that it has got a huge clientele in not just Indian but also among people from different ethnicities. Singapore is a cosmopolitan city-state that welcomes people from all cultural backgrounds; and all these people bring the taste of their country along with them.

Talking about Indian food, the most common opinion people have is that Indian food is spicy and hot. To be honest, it is, but not all of the Indian dishes will set your palate on fire. Take Butter Pepper Pomfret for example, it’s a white Pomfret fillet marinated with butter pepper cream and sesame seeds, cooked slowly in tandoori oven. Wow, drools all over again!

And if we talk about vegetarian dishes, you can try Handi Paneer, a cottage cheese based dish that also boasts of Indian vegetables, bell peppers, tomato sauce and Indian spices.

Foodies will also love Eggplant in Semi-dried Gravy, a ratatouille style dish that is not just savory, but a dish you’ll want to have again and again.

And that’s not all, when it comes to booking a table for a special evening, you can easily make a reservation at the Apolo Bistro through their website. Be it a social event gathering or a corporate function, Apolo Bistro is able to handle large orders with same diligence, quality and fast order execution. Curiosity got better of us and we had to ask them the details of the session. Turns out, it is a special program for the alcohol aficionados. The details of the Alcohol Therapy sessions are available at their website; however, we would like to share our experience. Read along…

Just pay $39 (plus taxes) per head and you’ll get unlimited supply of Gin, Vodka, Rum and Whiskey. It is like, when you can have a buffet for food, so why should alcohol lag behind? And this was the same time when we realized we can chug down more rum than we thought we could.

Ladies’ Night (Wednesdays 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm):

And just when we thought guys have a higher capacity to process alcohol and a have a good time, Apolo Bistro proved us wrong, and they enlighten us on every Wednesday. Ladies! This is the time when you can enjoy red/white wine, gin, vodka and rum, and 3 different cocktails. And just for ladies, this offer stays on for 2 hours. Needless to say, girls can give us a tough competition.

This is the same Liquid Buffet that happens on Tuesdays, the same offer, with a variation in the time. Liquid Buffet on Sunday is valid form 7 in the evening to 8:30 at night. Apart from that, everything is just the same.

Apart from the Wednesday, we were able to visit all the other three therapy sessions. Our female friends got to go to all of them, and especially loved the special ladies night out. The “therapists” were really courteous and friendly towards the guests, and we had a great time each time.

Whether we miss our home food or not, the ambience and vibes of Apolo Bistro always make us want to visit them again and again. Ever since we came to know about this amazing Indian restaurant in Little India Arcade, this has become our favorite food joint to hang out with friends and throw birthday parties and many corporate events.
